One could simply analyze the theme of Toni Morrisons Beloved to be about slavery, but the reader is introduced to its many complexities through the social struggles of very different characters. Once Paul D finally grasped his overpriced sliver of freedom, he had to figure out if there was anything worthwhile he could do with it. Throughout Beloved, Paul D struggles between his natural instincts to settle down, procreate, and rely on the people that were part of a life he wants to put behind him, or to stay on the move in constant search of something better to call his own. The right to marry as oppose to simply breed (as seen with Sethe and Halle), an opportunity to purchase an elders freedom through additional Sunday work (as done by Halle for his mother, Baby Suggs), or a chance to carry guns and become educated were unheard of for most slaves. Even though there were rare opportunities, many, such as the right to marry, were limited to Paul D and his other brothers since Sethe was the only eligible woman they would encounter in their confinement of plantation life, and she was already taken by their brother Halle. Learning to read or write was also shunned by Paul D and his brothers since they felt nothing important to them could be put down on paper (125). They couldnt possibly conceive the value of education when constantly inundated with nothing but hard physical labor. These elusive and misunderstood opportunities became the primary building blocks of Paul Ds character, blocks that did not provide a very strong foundation that were kept locked away in what Morrison refers to as his rusty tobacco tin. The persistence of all the Sweet Home slaves is ultimately tested when Mr.Garner passes away and Mrs. Garners brother-in-law takes over.
